Spring your green thumb into action

Spring means warmth and sunshine and as soon as the weather starts to warm up, fruit and ornamental trees begin to show stunning little flower buds.

Whether you do or don’t have a green thumb, you can still enjoy the fruits of your labour by planting a hardy tree – one even a non green thumb can’t kill.

The Prunus variety is one of the hardiest blossom trees and includes delicious options such as plum, cherry, peach and apricot.

They are the most popular because of their survival rate, while they are also available in a wide range of sizes and shapes from weeping to upright habits and they look impressive in all landscapes – mass planted, screening or as feature trees.

These relatively small trees are well suited to small courtyards and gardens, as well as large open spaces. Other hardy blossom varieties include Pyrus (pear) and Malus (crab apple).

Spring Garden Tips:

·         September is the perfect time to feed your lawns and gardens with controlled release fertiliser and plenty of water

·         Prune winter-flowering plants that have finished flowering such as camellias and grevilleas

·         Prepare garden beds for vegetable planting
