Wintery Blues

With winter well and truly on our doorstep, it’s time to rug up (quite literally). Rugs are the perfect addition to your home and something that I think is essential for keeping your home well insulated and cosy in the colder months. While buying a rug sounds like an easy task it can definitely be one that sneaks up on you. I don’t know about you but I find myself spending hours scrolling the internet trying to find the perfect rug, getting lost amongst the thousands of different designs, patterns, materials and style. Well, to help you find the perfect rug for your home, I’ve put together a list of my go-to rugs and the things you should keep in mind when selecting yours.

TIPS WHEN SELECTING YOUR PERFECT RUG

FIND YOUR STYLE

Pinterest will become your best friend when discovering what interior style you are. Just like when you choose your overall colour scheme and style for your home, the same goes when selecting a style rug you’d like to go with. I suggest researching inspirational images of what type of colours and patterns you like and think about these when selecting your rug. If you want to keep in theme with your home (generally you will fall into one of four categories; classic, contemporary, resort or designer), then I suggest choosing a rug style that will compliment this. For example, if you are trying to achieve a Classic Hampton style home then I would suggest choosing a rug that has a more traditional and classic pattern rather than a bold, geometric one. Also, designers tip – trust your gut instinct! It’s often your first choice that you end up going with in the end.

MEASURE, MEASURE, MEASURE:

One of the most important elements when selecting a rug for your home is to accurately measure the intended space. This will ensure you get the sizing of your rug right from the get go. The placement of your rug is also super important to ensure the proportion and scale of your room is balanced  For example, when selecting a rug for a living room, I tend to make sure the rug fits slightly underneath the couch and completely underneath the coffee table. Your rug should ground your space and the elements within it. There is nothing worse than finding a rug that you like and realising it doesn’t fill or fit in the space properly.

AGELESS AESTHETIC

A rug is possibly one of the biggest décor investments of your home (and trust me, it is worth spending that little bit extra in getting a good quality rug that will last a lifetime, or just about). It is important when selecting your rug to make sure that you love it and that it will withstand the test of time in terms of durability. Choosing a rug that consists of elements that you love will ensure that this piece will be one that lasts and doesn’t need to be frequently replaced. For example, choosing a rug that consists of colours that you love, or, on the other hand, a rug that is a neutral colour and acts as a base for you to add other décor items, is an important consideration. I often tell clients that if they are struggling to find a colour or style they love to look at their fashion choices and colours/patterns that they wear every day is often a good indication of what they love and feel comfortable in.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT MATERIAL

WOOL

If you love the idea of coming home and walking on a plush surface that makes you feel like you are walking on a pile of fluffy clouds then a woollen rug is your go-to. Made up of a combination of natural materials, a woollen rug is both soft and durable. Best suited for a dining and/or living room.

SYNTHETICS

A very cost effective rug choice. Synthetic rugs are extremely durable and often the perfect choice for families that don’t love the maintenance that’s often associated with a silk or woollen rug. Synthetic rugs come in all different types of styles and prints and can fit in really well with any style. Often used in kitchens, living, dining and bedrooms.
