The future of Australian homes is evolving and exciting.

Far more than bricks and mortar, homes can unite families and friends, spurring interaction, connection, conversation and learning.

World of Style by Porter Davis welcomed award winning Australian architect and host of Grand Designs Australia, Peter Maddison, into the showroom to host a Masterclass discussing how architecture is evolving in urban settings.

We sat down with Peter to discuss architectural design for the future and how to create a home that encourages connection & interaction.

On the Importance of Architecture

“I think architecture is one of the most rewarding professions one could have. You're given the responsibility of designing a permanent edifice that represents not only [Australians’] hopes and aspirations but has some relevance in society where we can better the way we live.

“It’s not just bricks and mortar. It’s where we learn to be the people we are. Kids go to school but I think a lot of learning goes on in the home.”

On the Future of Homes

“I look at the European model where Grandma, Grandpa, parents and the kids cohabitate. We are in a situation in Australia where we are pulled apart and separated. I see a big future in housing where there’s an opportunity for us to go back to that community living model and I think there’s a lot of joy to be had in that.”

“The way we’ve been designing houses over the last 50 years has changed, where it’s a lot more connected to the outdoors, kitchens are now no longer locked away in a separate room but they’ve been bought out as a showpiece and as an area where we can interact. That’s a really healthy thing.”

On How Homes can Help Create Connection

“Understanding the way we interact, the way we converse, the way we grow up as a family where grandparents can come in and have a role to play.”

“The power of that is quite incredible. When we design a home we assemble materials and samples. We think what is correct for the owners and they vary depending on who the clients are”

On Porter Davis World of Style

“It’s very interesting that Porter Davis have put together a one stop shop where you can come in and scratch and feel and smell the materials that you are going to use in your home.

“Having a broad palette that is going to be available for clients to see is a pretty special idea.

“I often say, it’s not just about the building, it’s the furniture, interior and the landscape that brings a whole environment together.”

On Australian Home Builders

“What’s fantastic in Australia is that there is great experimentation and diversity going on, so there’s not one story that solves everything. We’ve got the opportunity to build in an architectural style that relates to the great diversity going on in this country.”
